Yesterday he found out that his job (a very good job as a pressman at the local paper) were going to be laying off 150+ jobs. This made him realize that this job is all he has to fall back on. After graduating h.s. he got this job and hasn’t been to college and this is all that he knows as far as special training. We both agreed when we met that we wanted to travel but due to life circumstances that has never happened. So he was thinking the AF could provide him with special training, travel, and its the ’safest’ branch of the military. He also said that he has this itch to serve his country. I totally support him, my only concern is the debt that we have and how we can pay it off if he decides to join the AF. I know that the money can’t be all that great starting off, and we have bills that have to be paid. I won’t be out of school and would like to finish but still have nursing school ahead of me. Has anyone been in the same situation as me?? Or are in the AF and can explain how it all works in the beginning? We also have a dog and i want to be sure that she is allowed to go where ever we go.
One, last thing, I should mention the ‘debt’ we have isn’t outstanding, just your basic things like cars, and a couple of credit cards that don’t amount to over 2,000 dollars. so it isn’t alot… my concern is guess wouldn’t be ‘debt’ necessarily but bills in general. ie: cell phones, insurance, cars, etc…

OOH, yes, yes. I guess i miss-worded the headline. We both have benefits as far as health is concerned. I more so meant, what benefits are there to joining the AF (besides the obvious-travel etc)…
Wow! I didn’t realize after 20 yrs you can retire. Thats nice! So do you know anything about this- I am currently in school, and was planning on applying to nursing school to start next semester. If I am uprooted and moved where ever he goes, do they offer any types of school benefits for me? Or do I just have to start from scratch and find a school on my own?
As far as my needs are concerned, I can always get any 9-5 job. i have my associates, but am working on my bachelors degree, and hope to go to nursing school because thats what i want as my career. i just didn’t know if they offer any classes to dependants or not at a discounted rate or something.

i told him the only thing i want to make sure of if we decide to do this, is that our dog can come with us, and that he picks a fairly safe job because i don’t want to be the wife that has to raise a family on my own, while he is gone. it may sound selfish, but i want our kids to have both parents, not just me.
to: Above All, thanks for your answer. you answered my question about the AF assisting me with my education. Its not problem that they won’t, I never expected it, I just wanted to know my options. & I do understand that ’safe’ is totally relative. I would just prefer him not be on the front line. I think we can handle being seperated for months at a time, but when it’s time, I don’t want to raise our family alone. Whether he be deployed or, well you know. Anywho- your answer was really helpful. OH and thanks for telling me about the dog thing. She is just like a child to us, so whereever we go, she’s gonna go! haha
Above All- you said that i wouldn’t be able to be with him during tech school? is that when they are in specialized training for their job? because i was under the impression that as soon as he was out of basic then we’d be able to be back together.
When do you find out where you will be stationed?

Ah! thanks, guess timing is off on this thing. So where he is stationed will be where he is trained for whatever job he decides to do right? and is that where he will stay for the duration of his time in the AF? (other than being deployed, obviously) or can you be re-located.
thats good to know. i don’t know that i could live overseas, so if that happens it would be a decision we would have to deal with then.

do you know what jobs typically get you stationed over there?

do you know if what “above all” said was true, that i wouldn’t be able to see him during his technical training??
